Habitat includes 106 acres of marsh with about 7 acres of permanent water, 158 acres of cropland and 10 acres of pasture. Purchased by Nebraska Game and Park Commission in 1998, it provides valuable wetland habitat for migratory waterfowl and other birds. A restoration including sediment and tree removal was completed in 2003 and the wetland was re-named Ackles Marsh in honor of a longtime sportsman and DU volunteer, Robert D. Ackles of Hastings who passed away in 1996.
