Oglala National Grassland

Area 93,344 acres. Scattered holdings at the northeastern end of Sioux County. The area around Sugarloaf Butte offers Brewer’s sparrows (local), sage thrashers (rare), long-billed curlews, Swainson’s and ferruginous hawks, and chestnut-collared longspurs. In addition, horned larks, western meadowlarks and lark buntings are common breeders in this vast region, which extends east into Dawes County. Buteo hawks are common here (red-tailed, Swainson’s and ferruginous), and golden eagles are also frequent.
