Purchased in 1982 by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the southern unit consists of a shallow 305 acre wetland. This is an excellent area in spring for seeing thousands of migrating ducks and geese, especially snow geese. April through June it attracts a host of shorebirds including American avocets and long-billed dowitchers.
